Spartanburg School District Six is expanding its commitment to serving high-quality meals to students. In addition to serving organically grown fruits and vegetables, District Six will now feature local grass-fed beef in school cafeterias.
District Six sought out a new partnership with Walnut Grove Farms in Roebuck, SC , which maintains and supports a herd of commercial Angus beef cows, registered Brown Swiss cattle, and both purebred and full-blooded Braunvieh cattle. This unique combination, when crossbred, creates the Swangus™ breed.
Research has shown that this type of grass-fed beef is usually higher in vitamins and has significantly lower levels of saturated fat compared to grain-fed beef. District Six plans to use this nutrient rich beef in student’s favorite recipes such as tacos and nachos.
Director of Food Service, Ron Jones said, “We are proud of this collaboration with our neighbors here in Roebuck, and we feel that local grass-fed beef is a perfect complement to our organically grown vegetables produced on our very own Cragmoor Farm.”
